I always thought that crime per capita cannot be the only lens by which to read San Francisco crime issues. The city is considerably smaller than most other world class cities and there is really no way to avoid what in other places would be “sketchy neighborhoods.” If you take a walk in any of the flatter parts of town you will undoubtedly feel unsafe.
Crime per square mile tells a very different story and I believe this metric should be taken into account whenever reporting San Francisco crime stats.
San Francisco tops the list by a country mile. Other notoriously dangerous cities, Chicago and Baltimore, follow, but are multitudes less dangerous in terms of incidents per square mile.
